Take Action Now:

Our Current Goal: Zoning

We ask everyone in the region to encourage the Powell County Judge Executive, as well the Judge Executives from Menifee, Lee and Wolfe Counties, to enact zoning laws which would limit projects of this large scale from moving forward in their county. Zoning laws would force any developers to seek approval from both local officials and local concerned residents for any new large developments. Zoning in specific areas around the Red River Gorge area would set strict rules for the size and impact of new buildings, such as the proposed destination resort.

By passing zoning in Powell county the developers of this proposed resort could be forced reduce the size and overall impact of the development – both in the current proposed location or in any other location in Powell County. The zoning that RRGU is pursuing should be clear to exclude gambling, gaming, or betting establishments of any kind, as well as provide a list of construction requirements and an approvals or permitting process for any new developments.

Call Powell Co. Judge Exec. Anderson:

Or call Judge Anderson at (606) 663-2834 and say:

“My name is [YOUR NAME] and I live at [YOUR ADDRESS].

I want to urge Judge Anderson to please pass zoning in Powell County and protect Slade and the Red River Gorge from damaging over-development.

Powell County needs career-path jobs and real economic opportunities that support and enhance the existing ecological and cultural features of the region. The resort proposed by Red River Economic Development (RRED) simply has a footprint so large that unintended negative impacts are inevitable.

Zoning is vital to preserving and guiding positive economic development in Powell County and I ask that you please support any zoning initiative that would prevent the building of excessively-large developments in the region surrounding the Red River Gorge.

Nobody wants the region to turn into Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Please take steps to ensure that remains a reality.”
